Some Press Linky Dinks

Thursday, October 18th, 2007 by Heather

We’ve got quite a few reviews, interviews and other press over on the Links page and Catie has a few of her own on her website. However, it’s been a while since I went out searching and I know there are others out there waiting to find their way into our list.

First, I’ll highlight a few I’ve found that we don’t seem to have linked anywhere yet…and a couple of them I’m surprised we’ve missed over the years! If you find any others we’ve missed or that Catie’s missed, please add a comment with a link and we’ll be sure to add it.

Now why Catie doesn’t have this one linked to her page, I wouldn’t know…but check out the interview and all the music clips from her live webcasted Front Porch House Concerts gig hosted by hosted by Jon and Luana Eckhard in Boulder, CO on November 19, 2006 posted up on brightcove.TV. I’ve posted the interview here, but go check out all the songs at brightcove.TV. They’ve got The Trouble You Bring and Red Light, from Dreaming in Romance Languages, New Flowers from Long Night Moon and a somewhat rare playing of You Can Always Be Gone going all the way back to Truth From Lies with a fun little addition mid song…and lots more!! They’re really good quality videos…be sure to check them all out!!

Queer Music Heritage - January 2004
A radio show and website by JD Doyle. The first half of this show highlights Deidre McCalla, Catie’s section starts at 28:30 in. A lot of good bio about and conversation with Catie as well as mixing in her music. The website has some fun old pictures too! But holy moly…the first music clip of Dandelion sounds like it’s from a tape that was played out (so to speak ;) ) or spent waaaaaay too much time in the sun!! LOL :)

The prodigal blogger…

Monday, October 15th, 2007 by Heather

Okay, don’t know how full or frustrating your lives have been this year, but I can verify that 2007 has been a busy one for me since I’ve been pretty much MIA around here this year as life happened. Hard to believe that I last posted to the general forum in March and my last FanBlog was almost a year ago!!

And, I almost let stuff like Catie’s appearance in Ellen DeGeneres’s Wish You Were Here, slip by…quite the company she keeps, those notable folks from Maine…a writer, a marathon runner, a model and even a former Senator!

But other than being delinquent in my duties and regardless of the state of the world and all the pain and frustration about that (Hope is a state of mind regardless of the state of the world.), it’s generally been a good year for me personally with a variety of travel that included a fall visit to my best friend’s spread in upstate NY & a side trip to Burlington, VT (to surprise my pals The Wailin’ Jennys at their first shows there and in Saranac Lake) as well as a month in Bali, Indonesia, lots of sailing classes to expand my sailing skills and get a variety of certifications that give me the ‘creds’ to charter my own sailboat next year for my 45th birthday (yes, I’m not ashamed to admit it! ;) ) down in the BVIs, and of course, lots of music.

Folks I’ve seen in concert this year (several on multiple occasions and some not often enough!) include my pals Catie, The Wailin’ Jennys, bluehouse, Blame Sally, Mark Erelli and Emma’s Revolution as well as Girlyman, Indigo Girls, Kris Delmhorst, Cheryl Wheeler, Kristina Olsen, The Ditty Bops, Kenny White, Richard Shindell, Chris Pureka, Ralph Stanley & his Clinch Mountain Boys, a couple of choral groups and a couple of other people you wouldn’t know…and I’m probably missing something too! Other shows I had hoped to see but for which I was either sick, busy, or out of town included Erika Luckett, Laura Love, Heather Combs, the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, and the Asylum St. Spankers among others.

Do chime in at the forum and let us know what you’ve been up to and what music has filled your calendars. You never know who you might hear about for the first time that might become your next most favorite musician!!

So here we are now in mid-October already - sheesh! - and we in the Bay Area are lucky enough to have our gal Catie coming back to Berkeley for not one, but two shows on October 24 & 25 at the venerable Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse. Catie will be sharing the stage with another wonderful musician and local Berkeley artist now residing in NY, Rachel Garlin. I’m excited to have them both in town and playing together. I’ve been to a lot of Rachel’s shows before she moved and love her music as well. Plus, it’s been a while since the locals have had Rachel home, so I’m sure that between the two wonderfully talented women on stage, the house will be packed! If you’re anywhere in the Bay Area…be sure to join us!!

Attention Karaoke Fans!

Friday, October 13th, 2006 by Heather

Are you a “closet” karaoke singer? Or do you love to belt it out for all the world to see and hear? Either way…Catie’s just put up a special treat especially for you!

If you go to her “Music” page and look at track 13 (Track 13? Today’s Friday the 13th! Coincidence? :o) you’ll see a People Look Around instrumental version all ready for you to sing along with…including Catie backing you up on vocals!

I’ve already tried it…I pretty much su…well, DON’T sound like Catie. ;) I can’t hit those soprano and high altos very well…I’m a natural tenor. But hey…did that stop me from singing it right here at my desk at work…no way! :D

So go have some fun!

Catie’s American Microphone Interview

Thursday, September 14th, 2006 by Heather

Our friend, Rob Millis, has posted a video interview with Catie at his online production group called American Microphone. I saw Catie announce this on her own site…you should most definitely check it out…just click the mic below!
American Microphone

But before I get into anything about the interview, I’ve gotta rib our friend Rob a bit. You might remember him…the producer of the “perpetually forthcoming documentary, Tangled Stories.” His words, not mine! Yeah, Rob…we’d love to see it before Lucy hits puberty! ;)

First, when you open the video…’have patience’…I’m on a T1 and it took forever to load for me the first time, but it’s worth the wait. I’ve got a crappy monitor, so it’s a bit dark too, but I can see Catie decked out in her “Love” shirt as she talks about all kinds of topics…the new CD, Katrina, filming the People Look Around video, politics, songwriting, parenting, and her conversion to optimism.

One of my favorite segments is when Rob asks if she feels that singing from a particular political perspective is “preaching to the choir” or if there is the ability to actually change peoples’ minds. She talks about how more well known folks walk and talk rather delicately around various sensitive issues because they’ve got a lot to lose, whereas being a bit more under the radar, she’s got the ability to speak “really honestly and openly” about what she thinks without the same fears because much of her fan base is “longing to hear some straight talk about these things.” Probably my favorite quote is when Catie talks about playing in conservative areas she says, “You know, we can call it preaching to the choir, but I also feel like I’m nurturing the choir. I’m giving them a little love.”

It’s a great conversation, do go watch!!
